LUCK IN LAS VEGAS

By Mike Wells

You come into your pit stall, a tire is mishandled, then you are penalized and have to re-start at the tail end of the longest line in the 25th  position, what do you do?  You win the race of course!

That is what Jimmie Johnson and the no. 48 crew had to do last year at the Las Vegas Speedway for his third straight win at the newly reconfigured track. The win was also the 150th for Hendrick Motorsports. Johnson had to overcome early adversity and then overcome his own teammate Jeff Gordon, who led the most laps, to win the UAW-DaimlerChryler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

On Sunday, March 11, 2007, during a pit stop, a tire rolled out of the #48 pit stall upon leaving, so Johnson had to make a pass-thru penalty before the drop of the green flag. Johnson stopped and topped off the fuel on his way back thru. The ensuing penalty forced Johnson to restart at the end of the lead lap placing him in the 25th position. He patiently crept up through the field, stalking the contenders. Jeff Gordon gave up the lead with 32 laps to go. With only 11 laps remaining in the race, Johnson got out in front, then ran away at the end to win by nearly three seconds.

Johnson’s problems on the track as well as other drivers may have been contributed by changes its owner, Bruton Smith made including the new asphalt, pit road and banking. Banking in the corners went from 12°  to 20°. The Front Straight went from 8° to 9°. The Back Straight went from 3° to 9° .The drivers also had to adjust to a harder Goodyear tire.

Jimmie Johnson qualified 23rd for the race and led 89 laps in route to his victory. Jeff Gordon started 36th leading 111 laps to finish 2nd.  Qualifying was rough on both teammates but it seems they both adjusted to the changes just fine as the race progressed. Matt Kenseth was another driver dealing with this issue qualifying 37th but finishing 4th. It just goes to show, with a good team, smart decisions, patience and possibly a little luck, you can overcome adversity and bad qualifying.
