could logano be the nextbig thing in nascar ???By Katie SteeleConnecticut native, Joey Logano, burst into the NASCAR scene with a bang as he made his Nationwide Series debut in May. By NASCAR rules, a person must be 18 to drive in any of its 3 major Series. Logano, who has been a Joe Gibbs Racing Developmental driver since age 15, had a seat being saved for him at JGR, but was stuck on the sidelines until his 18th birthday. Logano’s racing career began at the tender age of 6, in Quarter-Midgets. It didn’t take long for him to find his knack in racing and by age 7 he already picked up his first racing Championship, by winning the Junior Stock Quarter-Midgets Division. But that was just step #1. In 1998, Logano picked up an Eastern Grand National Championship in the stock division and backed that up the following year by winning the Championship in the Modified Division as well. By age 12, Logano was already putting his name down in history by racing his Legends car to a record setting 14 consecutive wins at Atlanta Motor Speedway, right before going on to win the Pro National Championship later that year, when he became the youngest driver to ever do so in Legends history. He wasn’t done yet. As if all that wasn’t enough, last year Logano grabbed the 2007 Camping World East Championship, and did so as a rookie. There’s no denying the fact that this kid has talent. He can win in pretty much anything he races, and it may not be too much longer before he can add a NASCAR Cup win to his reseme of success. Finally May 24th 2008 came, Logano’s much anticipated 18th birthday. He wasted no time in making his Nationwide debut and hopped into his JGR car the following week at Dover. “The Monster Mile” is not one of the easiest racetracks, yet Logano was still able to beat several well-experienced, seasoned drivers to a very solid 6th place finish. Since then he has checked off another eight top 10 finishes, including his first win in the Series at Kentucky, where he made more history by being the youngest driver to ever win. Perhaps that’s why he has been dubbed “The best thing since sliced bread”,by Randy LaJoie. But now the biggest opportunity he has had so far is just before him. With Tony Stewart recently announcing his plans to leave Joe Gibbs Racing after the ’08 season, it opened up the seat to the #20 Home Depot Toyota. Rumors quickly spread that Logano would be the one to take Stewarts place, and the plans were finally made official on August 25th.
Logano will be driving full-time in the Cup Series in 2009, and he plans to make his Cup debut as soon as Saturday nights race at Richmond. But will he be able to find success in what could be the toughest form of racing he has tried yet? Even though Logano will be new to the Cup Series, his team will not be. He will have Stewarts current crew-chief, Greg Zipadelli, who had taken Stewart to both of his Cup Championships, along with the rest of # 20 crew that Stewart has right now. Logano has already done some Cup testing with the Joe Gibbs Racing team, and Zipadelli has claimed the driver to be “open-minded, not afraid to move around, and able to take what he has and do the best with is.” Even so, it’s not too hard to find critics claiming that Logano is too young to be thrown into a full season of Cup racing – especially when he hasn’t even done a full season in the Nationwide Series yet. Casey Atwood was a driver that had done very well in the Nationwide (then Busch) Series before being thrown into a Cup car at 19, never finding the success everyone thought he would have. Could that happen to Logano? Probably not. When he was just 15, Mark Martin already declared Logano better than some of the current Cup drivers, and now he will be racing for one of the top Cup teams. As Joey Logano makes his Cup debut and goes full time next year, all eyes are going to be fixed on him, because we all want to know: Will he succeed under all the pressure that Cup Series racing brings? As he goes through the turns of Bristol, the bump drafting of Talladega, and parades through the thousands of race fans, media members and sponsors, we will soon find out. Joey Logano has pretty big shoes to fill in the 20 car, but he just might be able to find the success he needs to do it with.
